Referrers

posted on march 9, 2003, tag: site

I've been noticing a few common search queries on this site lately are "refer," "last 50," "where came from" and "statistics." I guess that means people want to see something like, oh I don't know, a list of the last 50 referrers. Up until today, I've used my own custom-written statistics script (see image). I will continue to use that script, but for the visitors of this site who are curious, I've also installed Dean Allen's Refer script. From now on, you can find a link to the last fifty referrers at the bottom of the side bar. Feel free to look and click and whatever else you want to do.

Your statistics script looks pretty cool.. any chance of releasing the script for us to use?

OI was going to ask the same thing Daniel asked.

Yea that looks extremely nice and well done. I've tried to use Dean's script and for some reason it just doesn't want to work. It's hard to pinpoint the problem too. I'm confident the DB is working because it is able to login and create tables, however when I leave it up for a few days, nothing logs. I'm using the script from LGF right now which is fairly primitive. It just shows the URL of the referrer. No time or anything helpful. But yes, your script looks very nice indeed.

I had the same problem with 'Refer' when I first installed it. I got it to work by moving its position in the page. I can't remember where the instructions said to paste it, but it didn't work there. I put mine right before the first line of HTML and it works fine. Hope that helps.

I had problems with Refer as well. In fact, the only thing that fixed my problems was deleting every file and DB table, and starting from the beginning again. Then everything worked.

As far as releasing my statistics script—I had never considered it. I guess if enough people were interested, I might be willing to clean it up and release it. But would it really be worth it? Would more than 2 more people even use it?

Josh on 03/10/2003:

I think so, but why clean it up, just provide it as is and if people want it they can have it, no skin off your back. But that's a nice looking script, I think it might become very popular very quick.

Daniel on 03/11/2003:

Well, it looks really good from that screenshot. I agree, I believe that it would become quite popular if you released it.

Ha! I found the entry with my search string "i hate the word choose" in Google. I'm currently in an argument with another tech writer about whether to use the word "choose" or "select" when it comes to writing about picking an item from a menu.

I commonly complain to Google, but alas, it never quite gives me the satisfaction I'm looking for. I'm glad it led me here, though.
