Panther, G5, Etcetera

It's a good time to be Apple. I just got back from watching Jobs' WWDC Keynote speech, in which some really fantastic things were announced. The most important to me is Panther, the next version of OS X (10.3), and the second most important is the new G5. (I'm not going to go into details, because most people already know—but this is a remarkable machine. It's also priced quite nicely.)
Panther looks quite good, although I am a bit disappointed that it will be another $129 to upgrade. I feel that buying two Apple computers in the last 8 months entitles me to save $129 on upgrading to another point-release of OS X, but oh well. I think in the long run it will be worth it, especially since it has some really cool new features (fast user-switching, better Mail.app, and (oh dear lord this looks cool—)Expose) and will hopefully be even faster than the current build.
The only unfortunate thing is waiting until (possibly) December. I hope it comes faster...

Why the hell should Panther be free???

Once the release date gets closer, keep an eye out for special deals. It happened with Jaguar. Amazon was offering a rebate for nearly half back. As cool as Panther seems, Jaguar seemed a lot more worth the $130. So long as Panther is fast fast fast, I'll feel I'm getting my money's worth.

I read your comment via the notification email, and there was just enough space so that I couldn't see the '...' and '(kidding)' part, and I almost cried/wet my pants.
Anyway—yes, I figure there will be some form of promotion. I also agree, as I said, that the $130 is still worth it right now to me. There are lots of cool little things coming, and hopefully lots of speed.

Though a long-time PC user, I have to admit seeing the photo of Jobs holding up that big shiny chip made my heart go pitter-pat.

I've been using Panther now for a couple of days and all I can say is wow. Expose and Fast User Switching are not only cool, but i've already developed a dependancy on Expose as a core feature.
Speed as well is great improved, in all facets of the OS.
Oh and Textedit actually opens and saves in word .doc format.
