xPad Roadmap
posted on january 8, 2004, tag: xpad
It's not surprising that I receive many emails a day asking questions like, "When will xPad have [this feature]?" or, "When will the next update be?" So I thought I would take a minute to share a tentative xPad roadmap. Please note that this is in no way absolute and could change at any time. But it will at least give you an idea of how I plan to manage the project in the near future.
January
- Fix any open bugs found in version 1.0 (surprisingly, this count is holding at 2—both of which are cosmetic).
- Small feature addition and current feature tweaking.
- Build full beta-test group (see end of entry) and test build.
Early February
- Minor build release (probably 1.2).
Mid-February through Late March
- Develop version 2.0.
- Addition of several features including global quick search and .Mac/FTP synchronization and many others.
- Full beta testing.
April
- Release version 2.0.
This will probably change, but it's a good guess. As you can see, I plan to roll-out version 2.0 in early April. I've gotten tons of great feature requests and lots of feedback, and I plan to pack a lot of great new stuff into the next version.
Now's still a great time to buy xPad, however. As I said before, all updates will be free for registered users. That means if you buy xPad now, the 2.0 update will be free. I can't promise, however, that when version 2.0 comes out xPad licenses will still be only $9.99. Depending on how much I cram into the next major release, I might have to tweak the price-point. Get in the on the ground floor now and you'll get it all for $9.99.

I have been wondering about the price point on the upgrade. I am not opposed to a $4.99 upgrade or anything like that. I look forward to updates, 2.x and beta-testing.

I know this is probably complex to put in... but SCP/SFTP syncing would be neat too!
Keep up the great work... xPad is now one of my most used tools.

Color me impressed, xPad has all but replaced SubEtha as my editor of choice pretty quickly. It's the little things that make the difference, and xPad gets them all right. Best $10 I've spent all year (heh).

It would be cool if I could export to MT/Blogger through the Blogger API, or Atom when it's finished. I think livejournal, blogger, mt, radio and the others will all be supporting Atom.
Oh and it would be doubly cool if I could iSync it with my ipod/visor notes.
xPad has certainly become one of my favorite apps.

Another feature that would be nice is if the documents in xPad on my desktop showed up in xPad on my laptop via rendezvous, and vice versa.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. In the future, please direct all feature requests to the feature requests board on the forums. You can find them here: http://forums.maniacalrage.net

I like the simplicity of xPad and hope you can keep it simple. I also hope you do not waste your time trying to turn it into Yet Another Text Editor for People trying to Write Programs. We have LOTS of those. LOTS.
Thanks-Richard

How is 2.0 looking? Are you still on track for an April release?

Hi there! Yesterdays comment on macosxhints and your recent posts on your blog on all the time you are spending on your site has reminded me of xpad's roadmap... ;-)
Any insights on the current timeframe you have on sight?
Fond regards from Spain! TFS

Color coordinated files are nice, but I'd really dig some kind of tabbing structure in the drawer so I could visually hide the files that I don't need to see. I wanna name those tabs too, btw ;)
Awesome product, just what I've been looking for!

I've been a long time xPad user and gladly paid the registration fee in January. I've also recommended xPad to several people. I was just wondering how the development roadmap looks now. I'd like to see the aforementioned global search feature, and would like to have more options for organizing notes, such as folders, nested notes, etc. Perhaps the option to view only a certain category of notes, hiding the others, would be useful, too.
I too would be unapposed to paying a small upgrade fee (such as US$5.00) if it would aid in the development of additional features.
Thanks for such a great piece of software.

I'd be unOpposed to the upgrade fee as well. sigh Need more coffee..

It would be nice if Apple would just off their arses and hire Garrett so xPad could turn into iPad or something like it. It's a kick-arse app, but Garrett needs to be paid full-time to update it I think...

There will be a version 2.0. It will be a while, but it's going to happen. Certain coming Tiger features and some recent feedback have excited me to the project again, and it's going to happen.
Just give me some time. I'll give you a more concrete update when I get to that point. Thanks for all the feedback, everyone.
