A Few Things

posted on august 5, 2004, tag: me

Work is getting a bit busier and I've been preoccupied by a few things on the side, so I've neglected to post about a few things.

Dr. Bott doesn't stink after all

I meant to mention this last week, but Eric Prentice, CEO of Dr. Bott, LLC responded to my entry about his company's site not having a secure checkout option and the ridiculous CSR call that ensued. From Eric's comment:

As far as the security of our site, our cart is indeed secure and there have been no changes to our setup in the last 6 months so I'm not sure exactly what happened in your case. We do take security seriously.

It's good to know that Dr. Bott is concerned about security, and I'm happy to see a response from the company. I can now comfortably purchase things from Dr. Bott in the future, and they've reassured a customer—it's a win-win situation.

Now with PHP5!

Segpub moved to PHP5 on Tuesday. Things would have been a lot smoother here if I had bothered to check out how my site functioned in the new version, but I didn't so things were a terrible mess for several hours. One of the most significant changes in PHP5 is how XML and XSL are created and used and that affects this site very much. After several hours of fixing bad code on my part, everything was up and running again smoothly.

It's also worth mentioning that I have begun version 2.0 of this site's backend which is much smarter, leaner and uses new PHP5 class functionality. It should be done in a week or so and should speed the site up a little (as well as making the source a lot smaller and less messy).

Got milk?

It seems as though I've started to become lactose intolerant lately. I don't even know if this is possible, but recently any time I consume milk or yogurt I get sick. At first I thought it was a coincidence (I've never had the strongest stomach in the world), but last week I got sick three times (once on Friday night!) on three days during which I had milk and/or yogurt.

What I don't understand is that I used to drink milk every day and eat tons of yogurt and nothing ever happened. Now, suddenly, I can't do it. I can sneak in one bowl of cereal here and there without getting sick, but anything else makes my stomach very angry. And I love cereal! How will I survive this? I can't stand soy or rice milk.

Oh, my god! Ice cream! I just remembered about ice cream! No ice cream? Ever? Hopefully this is some strange bug I've got that will go away. Otherwise, this is a very sad story indeed.

Short films!

We've got another one on the way. Two quick bits to shoot and then we have to edit. Hopefully next week. Since Katia has a conference for work all weekend, we'll probably shoot another one as well. We're still chugging along.

Good luck on everything... especially the stomach.

You've just tried the wrong brand of soya milk, try some others. The stuff my local shop sells is quite horrendous but the brand I normally buy though is great - much nicer than nasty old milk!

In the UK you can get a soya ice-cream called Swedish Glace which is fantastic.

The lactose intolerance thing is very possible. Actually, it's even very probable with most people. I grew up drinking milk regularly. And with a big family that meant we had at least 3 gallons of whole milk at any given time. I wasn't even aware that most people didn't drink a few glasses a day until I noticed most of my friends' families didn't have fridges filled with it. My family slowly started to cut it out of their diets, and by the time I was visiting from college my mom would have to remind herself to pickup some extra whole milk for me.

Nowadays, I can barely make it through half a glass of 2% without running to the bathroom. It really sucks, but most people's bodies just can't process it. But for some reason or another, this doesn't always become an issue until we get older (for me I think it started in my mid-20s).

Now, to give you a little bit of hope, I have no problem with ice cream or yogurt. My girlfriend can even do whole milk in her cereal on a fairly regular basis. All I can say is take it easy on yourself, and try some lowfat milk or alternatives because that tends to be the worst.

Then again, maybe you're lucky and it's just a bug.

Denis Kabistan on 08/05/2004:

I used to have that it was somewhat of a bug that I had but it was only more severe with lactose products. Then again I was switching constantly from whole milk to lowfat and back.

Stephen Collins on 08/05/2004:

I didn't become lactose intolerant until my mid-20's, so it can happen late.

Start drinking Lactaid. All it is is milk the lactase enzyme added. It tastes exactly the same as milk.

I have some sorta lactose intollerant problem too. My friend don't understand it because it's kinda picky. I can't drink white milk but I can drink chocolate milk, I can't eat cheese but I can eat pizza and lasagna, I have no problems with yogurt or ice cream. So you can see my picky situation. Somewhere I heard that the spaghetti sauce and the chocolate could counter-act the effects of the dairy product.

Can't wait to see more movies!

how do you feel about php getting pwned by sun micro ?

Garrett on 08/06/2004:

I would assume you're talking about Sun "buying" PHP, which is a rumor. If you're talking about all the changes to PHP in version 5 that make it similar to Java, I feel great. PHP5 is faster and smarter.

Eric Czarny on 08/07/2004:

After hearing that Segpub was upgrading to PHP5 I took it upon myself to grab a book on PHP5 and read over the new changes. As of this point I have only written a small portion of the backend for my website, but the changes in PHP (such as the new object model) have made my life a lot easier.

I love the proximity PHP now shares with Java, it makes the code look cleaner and allows for better encapsulation in objects. My backend is entirely object-oriented, and the new object model makes my life that much better.

Anyway, I'm glad you got everything to work out here on Maniacal Rage in regards to the swich to PHP5. Once I finish writing my own backend I will send an e-mail your way to compare notes.

Chris Platts on 08/08/2004:

Richard C is right about Swedish Glace - comes in vanilla, chocolate and raspberry ripple and is soya based. Tastes much better than standard supermarket/Walls ice cream, but has a different texture to real ice cream.

For your cereal - muesli and other unsweetened cereals - try another Swedish product called Oatly. It doesn't have soya's slightly bitter/dry taste but it doesn't taste like milk either. Its also heat stable, so its good for oatmeal/porridge (instant or real).

Jason on 08/08/2004:

well it obvious that php is trying to make itself more attractive for a sun buyout.

if they did i think it would be great. Being i use aspt.net every day of my life. i can tell you with great confidence that it is 100% bullshit. the only thing they have on there side id massive advertising campaigns to convince every IT manager that it is the best thing since sliced bread.

it would be awesome if sun could put together a platform with strong database server (oracle??), php and some decent com development tools. and then take that product and market it correctly.

this competition would force microsoft to try and up the bar as well as sun.

on the other hand there is something to be said about a language like php, which is so popular with no coorperate backing, no money you know ? its kinda like when your favorite indy band sells out and signs a major label or like when a documentary maker makes 22 million in one weekend.

You'd be surprised to find out that about 70% of the world's population is lactose intolarant to a certain degree. Some people can drink a cup of milk and be fine, while other can't even have a small amount of it in their coffe without their stomach going crazy. Some dairy foods containing lactose will have an effect on you while others might not.

Now you can either give up eating all these wonderfull dairy products or have them in moderation(if your case is not that bad). Or you can visit your local health and nutrition store and pick up some LACTASE tablets or solution. They are fairly cheap under $10(about 120 tablets) and they work! You can use the tablets right before you are about to eat any dairy/lactose products, or a couple of drops of the solutions for your coffee/milk, etc.

LACTASE is the natural chemical enzyne which breaks down LACTOSE. Lactose intolarant people have a deficiency in producing LACTASE and therefore can't break down the LACTOSE and it ends up collecting in the colon fermenting and causing all your intestinal symptoms.
