Smashed Up
posted on november 15, 2004, tag: me
At some point in the last 24 hours, while our car was parked on the street near our apartment, some jerk smashed its front-end. The damage, although not severe, is pretty bad. The best part of our smash-up hit-and-run? The person left a fake note. That's right: the jerk put a blank piece of paper in the window of the car.
I can only assume they did this because they noticed witnesses to the collision and decided to fake leaving a note in hopes that no one would call the police. Well, it worked. No one did, and so we have no clue who hit our car. I'm going to knock on some doors tomorrow and see if anyone saw it happen but my hopes aren't high. It's just one of those things—live in New York City with a car, your car gets smashed.

I don't understand how people can do stuff like this and not feel bad about it. The percentage of the population with a conscience seems to be on the steady decline.

Take the piece of paper to your local police station. Explain to them the situation. Ask them if it is possible that they scan the paper for prints. It might be wise to let them take your finger prints as well. Who knows, something may turn up.

I can believe this. When I was living north of Seattle over the summer I was out late one night picking up a friend from a concert.
I was sitting at an intersection and the light turned green so I proceeded to cross the intersection, as I did a car turned right in front of me and I hit him in the rear side, did no significant damage to my Jeep Wrangler but screwed his car up good.
Needless to say, he hit and ran. I was lucky enough to get a good enough description and called the cops quick enough. They ended up finding him down the road 5 minutes later.

Dude, a plastic garbage bag and a little duct tape and... presto!

Hey don't lose all hope yet! I was in an accident in California in which the driver who caused it did not stop. I was in the midst of paying my $500 insurance deductible for the repairs when I was contacted and told that the driver had written a report of what happened and there was actually a witness who wrote a report as well....almost a month after it happened! After that incident, I do believe that there are some kind-hearted people left in the world!

a couple of years ago i stayed up late finishing a book ("The Green Mile", i think). The next morning, leaving my street, i got dazzled by the sun, skidded on the first ice of winter and hit a parked car.
The car was on double yellows (english for 'crap place to park') on a blind corner. I left a note, explaining what had happened and offering to cover the damage.
Unfortunately, due part to my insurers screwing me over and the guy i hit milking the insurers, i ended up paying well over the odds for just a new bumper - in fact, i paid about twice what the car was worth.
stupid mistake, sure it won't happen again; if it does, i'll leave a note - but some people see a decent gesture and milk it for all they can

Funny... A similar situation happened to my friend today after school. He approached his car and near the rear he noticed it was completely banged up, with red paint scratched upon it (his Prius is white). Another hit and run. Some people just have no conscience.

I feel for you. The same thing happened to me 14 years ago when I moved to DC from NJ, where I only had on street parking. It was my third day on the job, when I awoke to find the wheel well of my 280ZX smashed in. No note, no nothing. What's worse, I was making so little money as a Jr. Engineer, I couldn't afford to get it fixed immediately. Best wishes on the repair.

That sucks, sorry to hear that...
We drive the same car. I'm sorry about that too. Watch your oil consumption, it usually starts between 50,000 and 75,000 miles.

Thanks for all the comments. We're taking the car to the insurance estimation tomorrow night so we'll know what the damage is then.
Stupid bastards with their blank notes!

Also since i am logged in i expect to be able to edit my own posts. I dont like looking like a moron in front of everybody.
Garrett on 11/16/2004:
First of all, they don't count it as a collision, secondly, your comments seemed almost racist. Perhaps instead of wishing for an editing feature you could think before you post?
Jason on 11/17/2004:
Garrett, when did you become so uptight? what, bush got re-elected and you decided to join the moral majority? I was obviously kidding. Im sorry if I offended you. but since you do know me in real life im sure you realize that I am anything but racist.
that ding isn’t too bad you could get it fixed for a couple hundred bucks if you found someone who had that paint color in stock and was willing to make a deal.
