Music Suggestions, Please
posted on december 13, 2004, tag: entertainment
I need new music. I have this habit with music where I end up listening to the same few albums over and over for months. Then I move on to a new group of albums and do the same thing. This doesn't bother me too much, but I've now cycled through my entire music collection twice and I'm bored. I need new music and I want you to suggest it. I am open to anything, but in the spirit of sharing, I'll tell you that the last few weeks have been spent listening to:
- Belle & Sebastian (If You're Feeling Sinister and Dear Catastrophe Waitress)
- Weezer (The Blue Album)
- Franz Ferdinand
- Linkin Park (Reanimation and Meteora)
Thanks to Shawn's recent suggestions I'm now listening to:
- Elliot Smith (XO)
- Jimmy Eat World (Futures)
- The Shins (Chutes Too Narrow)
But I need more. The only requirement is that it must be available on the iTunes Music Store (US). I don't mind full albums, single tracks, anything. Comment on this entry with your suggestions and I'll give 'em a shot.
Update: I've fixed an issue with the comments. Sorry about that, please continue to suggest songs!

In order of best albums:
Execution of all things
Take offs and Landings
More Adventurous
they have become one of my favorite bands and my playlist is basically the same...anything by elliot smith is great too but "basement..." wasn't as good in my opinion.
Will on 12/13/2004:
Might I suggest (if you don't have it already):
Sebadoh - Bakesale
Given what you've been listening to, I think you'd enjoy it. It's been getting alot of play by me lately.
Diana Schnuth on 12/13/2004:
checking iTunes store on husband's computer
In the realm of harder rock and guitar-driven jams, check out Clutch. First try out their song "Big News I" or "Spacegrass," and if you like those, try the entire self-titled album.
In the 90's British Alternative realm, download the songs "I Want to Touch You" and/or "Texture." If you like those, download both the albums Chrome and Ferment.
Other bands you may or may not have heard of, and may or may not enjoy: The Pixies, Pavement, Sugar, and the Afghan Whigs.
Hope this helps...
Diana Schnuth on 12/13/2004:
Oh, yeah, Sebadoh, too—good call, Will. Lou Barlow's solo work is good, as well.
Alum on 12/13/2004:
Here's a few tracks I've been listening to lately:
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - U2
Mood For A Day - Yes
Am I High - N.E.R.D.
Keep It Together - Guster
If You Leave - OMD
Prototype - Outkast
Aint Too Proud To Beg - The Rolling Stones
That's all for now. :)
Diana Schnuth on 12/13/2004:
Um, I failed to mention that Chrome and Ferment are albums by Catherine Wheel.
mathewhoy@gmail.com on 12/13/2004:

soupnazi on 12/13/2004:
The Push Stars (After the Party)
Scott McNulty on 12/13/2004:
You may scoff, but William Shatner's album 'Has Been' is worth a listen, and not just for irony's sake.
bryce on 12/13/2004:
Try anything from The Decemberists or Grandaddy.
Jason on 12/14/2004:
based on your musical tase. i will recomend: interpol, the postal service, the stills, elephant, and Sondre Lerche. and i am guessing that linkin park is the exceptiont o the rule.
Ellie on 12/14/2004:
My recommendations would be The Futureheads, The Thrills, Kings of Convenience, The New Pornographers, the new U2 album and, of course, Morrissey. Try out his new album "You Are the Quarry", seriously. I second the recommendations of Interpol, The Decemberists & The Postal Service too.
jenigrant on 12/14/2004:
I highly recommend The Dismemberment Plan. Try "The Ice of Boston" from ...is Terrified (the entire album is great). I also third Interpol and The Postal Service.
Rob Wilmshurst on 12/14/2004:
Get yourself hold of the new Kasabian album (self titled); it's absolutely fantastic. Kings Of Leon's new Aka Shake Heartbreak's a good one as well.
There's a band called The Open who aren't that big in england, let alone in the states but try getting hold of The Silent Hours.
Definitely agree with all the other suggestions above too; we've all got such brilliant taste!
marclc on 12/14/2004:
well it's not available on iTMS but.. you should really get One Day Remains by Alter Bridge. If you didn't like alt/rock before you will when you listen to them.
Kevin LaCoste on 12/14/2004:
It's really unfortunate that I can't find them on the iTunes music store but my favorite band has got to be Finger Eleven. Nobody rocks out quite like these guys and unlike a lot of bands who sound good in the studio these guys are even better live. You can check out a few songs and videos from their home page.
Erik Weibust on 12/15/2004:
Hear are a few of my favs:
Uncle Tupelo
Wilco
Son Volt
the Jayhawks
Check 'em out and let me know what you think.

Have you listened to Linkin Park's Numb [Encore] feat. with Jay-Z ? Apparently is hot right now
here's a direct link
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=28458321&selectedItemId=28458326
Enjoy it.
Shawn Grimes on 12/15/2004:
I would have to recommend the band 311 to you. I believe all of their albums are available on iTunes and I suggest starting off with the album Grassroots. A couple of other suggestions,
The Killers
Future Leaders Of The World
Modest Mouse
But whatever you do, definitely give 311 a go (I'm a bit biased since they are my favorite band.)
Daniel on 12/15/2004:
Try:
Iron and Wine (Available through iTunes, start with the cover of the Postal Service's "Such Great Heights", "Radio War", "Naked As We Came" "Jesus the Mexican Boy" or "Each Coming Night" )
Blonde Redhead (Also available through iTunes)
and I also suggest picking up some Modest Mouse.
Darin on 12/15/2004:
!!! - Louden Up Now
Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Hot Hot Heat - Make up the Breakdown
IMA Robot - IMA Robot
Head Automatica - Decadence
Razorlight - Up All Night
The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Hearth
About Erik's post: " Hear are a few of my favs:
Uncle Tupelo
Wilco
Son Volt
the Jayhawks"
When Uncle Tupelo broke up, its members founded Wilco, Son Volt and The Jayhawks. Way to be diverse, lol. Wilco is to Uncle Tupelo what Foo Fighters are to Nirvana.
Erik Weibust on 12/15/2004:
Yes Darin. Son Volt and Wilco formed by some of the old members of Uncle Tupelo. The Jayhawks have no relation to Uncle Tupelo other then they both make music. And I didn't know that listing a diverse set of music was a requirement for this exercise. I thought it was just list some stuff we like.
If you want a diverse list from my iTunes library I'd check out some:
Wilco
Rober Earl Keen, Jr
Public Enemy
and finish your day off with some Pink Floyd.

Ghast23 on 12/15/2004:
jus' a few bands I've been digging lately:
Death Cab for Cutie, Earlimant, Yo La Tengo, Red House Painters...
valdok on 12/15/2004:
Go retro with some Jethro Tull and Zeppelin.
And for those stuck in the present, Kill Hannah and Modest Mouse.
Oh yeah... and Local H is some awesome rock n' roll... get their two latest albums, "Here Comes the Zoo" and "Whatever Happened to PJ Soles?"
Can't go wrong.
Tim Uruski on 12/16/2004:

The Fiery Furnaces (Blueberry Boat)

The Secret Machines (Now Here is Nowhere)
Iron and Wine (Our Endless Numbered Days)
Halloween, Alaska (Halloween, Alaska)
Goldfrapp (Felt Mountain)
Jonathan Smith on 12/16/2004:
Some of my favorites right now are:
Kaskade
Four Tet
Beth Orton
and some Dane Cook comedy.
Jonathan Smith on 12/16/2004:
Some Sublime always puts me in a good mood too. But mostly on nice warm days because it makes me think of California.
Garrett on 12/16/2004:
Wow, great suggestions everyone. I didn't expect so much feedback! I'm listening to your recommendations, keep them coming. I'm going to update you on the stuff I've downloaded and listened to in a day or so.
Thanks again!
Jason on 12/17/2004:
well i guess you can safely say that conversations about music are more interesting than ones about programming. Thats hogwash if you ask me.
Joel Blain on 12/18/2004:
Garret -
here are two albums you should really check out. Based on your currently listening list I can't believe you haven't already.
Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
Pedro the Lion - Achilles Heel
James on 12/23/2004:
I second Iron and Wine. Two lovely albums. Also, in a similar vein, the excellent Homesongs by Adem who used to be in Fridge. And his Fridge co-founder Kieran Hebden now records as FourTet whose folktronica albums I'd also recommend.
Modest Mouse gets another vote from me. 'The Cold Part' on The Moon And Antarctica album is wonderful. And check out 'Coney Island' on Death Cab For Cutie's 'The Photo Album'.
Sebadoh's 'Sebadoh' album is uniformly excellent. And I'd back up anyone who recommended Interpol's first album to you, in particular the tracks 'PDA' and 'NYC'. (The second album, Antics, seems like a bit of a re-tread to me.)
As for British stuff, one album every single human being should have is Snow Patrol's 'Final Straw'. Not a bad song on it. And The Beta Band's 'Three EPs' - a must have.
Ooh, what else? Let me think.
Badly Drawn Boy 'The Hour of Bewilderbeast'
A Silver Mt Zion 'Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards' ('The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes' especially)
Broken Social Scene 'You Forgot It In People'
Any Pavement. (If you need one song: 'Kennel District' off 'Wowee Zowee')
Stephen Jones (ex-Babybird) 'Almost Cured of Sadness'
The Black Heart Procession 'Three'
Anything by Mogwai ('Like Herod' and 'You Don't Know Jesus' are excellent)
And loads, loads more. But check these out while you still can be bothered...
James on 12/23/2004:
(Of course, I have singularly failed to check whether any of those suggestions are available on the iTunes Music Store. Oops.)
Evan Chaney on 12/24/2004:
I can't believe no one has posted The Strokes yet.
Mindy on 12/28/2004:
hi! my first time visiting...found your site searching for info about livesearch. love the design.
so many good music suggestions already but other amazing albums:
My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows
Eskobar - A Thousand Chances
Muse, every album is wonderful...
Music from the OC: Mix 2
Garden State soundtrack
no idea if these are on iTunes...
Garrett on 01/03/2005:
I've written a new entry about the music I've purchased so far based on these recommendations. Keep them coming!
Ellie on 01/03/2005:
I've recently been listening to Keane's Hopes and Fears.
Brad on 01/03/2005:
I'm a big fan of soundtracks. I listen to them a lot while I work. Lost in Translation is fantastic and anything that Jon Brion has done is great as well. He did the score for Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I Heart Huckabees. I think he also had his hand in the new Fiona Apple album which isn't being released for some reason or another.
Erik Weibust on 01/04/2005:
I got two more. First, my favorite CD I got in 2004 was "Reconstruction Site" by the Weakerthans. Which actually came out back in Jan of 2003. It's really a good CD check it out.
And in honor of Brad's soundtrack post, my favorite soundtrack is a tie between Singles and Beautiful Girls. Check 'em out.
Jonathan Smith on 01/04/2005:
Here's another. I heard this song on an MP3 stream I listen to quite often (DirtyRadio). This streaming is somehow backed by the members of Underworld who have some very cool electronic music. Although the stream usually has a nice blend of independant music.
The band is called TV on the Radio and the song that I'm listening to right now is Staring at the Sun which is on their Young Liars CD. Not sure if they are on the iTMS because they have access to that blocked here at work.
Shannon on 01/06/2005:
My sister's been giving me a ton of new awesome music lately, which I don't have time to list now (if I can get my hands on a burner I'll gladly burn you some), but I did want to mention the Unicorns — I just bought "Who Will Cut our Hair When We're Gone" and it's awesome — catchy as shit and very listenable. Also, in terms of soundtracks Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums are both great (Bob Dylan's "Wigwam" on the latter cracks me up (and, kind of strangely, makes me want to get drunk) and is worth a listen, even if (or especially if?) like me you're not usually a Dylan fan.
