Tiger Internet Tip
posted on may 4, 2005, tag: software
If you've noticed that your internet connection is slow since you installed Tiger, you're not alone. On both of my machines, OS X 10.4 effectively killed my internet connection. I was averaging 100kpbs download, which is very slow compared to normal. I also couldn't do video chats with anyone on iChat unless I tried over and over, and the quality was always awful. Today I found the issue:
Open System Preferences » Network. Go into the properties for your connection and click on the TCP/IP tab. Then click the Configure IPv6 button and set the menu to Off. Click OK and then Apply Now.

In about 10 seconds, your network will hopefully be speedy again. I went from 100kpbs to 700kpbs and I was able to do a 4-way video chat. IPv6 was definitely my issue, and it might just be yours if you've been having internet speed issues.

Interesting. Can you provide more details about this? Are you using this through Airport? Ethernet? Is your Internet access through a cable modem? DSL? If so, what kind of router/modem? Anything else interesting about your network (hubs/switches, etc)?

Oh, right, you work for Apple—here are my details:
I had the sluggish internet issue on both of my machines, and turning off IPv6 fixed the issue on both.
Power Mac G5
Connected via cable (built-in ethernet card) to LinkSys WRT54G.
PowerBook G4
Connected via Airport to LinkSys WRT54G in G only mode.
LinkSys router is connected to a LinkSys RT41P2-AT Router with 2 phone ports (I have Vonage), which is then connected to my Cable Modem. I'm not sure which modem I have, but I can look this evening.
As far as interesting things go, I do have an Airport Extreme Base Station using WDS to extend my WiFi network. I'm also using MAC address whitelisting and no WEP.

I have same problem with my MAC Mini running upgraded OS X Tiger and Netgear MR814v2 router. Slow internet, occasional drops, some websites faster than others (apple website slow/sometimes doesn't load). I'm hardwired through router. When I bypass router, internet improves. Anyone have a solution?

I have a similar problem with my Mac Mini as well. I recently upgraded to SBC Global's Pro DSL package (3Mbps down/500 KBps up) and am not getting anything like this. I seem to peak out at 1.4 Mbps down.
The interesting thing is that the SBC tech was out here this morning to trouble shoot and his Windows 2000 laptop connected directly to the modem consistently showed a 2.2 - 2.5 Mbps speed. I connected my Mac Mini directly to the modem, and did not see any improvement. My download speed ranges from 900 Kbps - 1.4 Mbps; regardless of whether I am connected directly to the dsl modem or through the D-Link Router. I have tried hard wired through the internal LAN connector or through Air-port, all with the same results.
I just disabled the ipV6 as well ,but did not see any improvement.
Interestingly, my wife's Windows XP laptop hits speeds of 1.4 - 1.7 Mbps directly to the modem or the router. I don't know what black magic the SBC technician was using on his laptop to produce 2.4 Mbps connectivity; he was not comfortable with network configuration, and felt that it was beyond his expertise.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? I contacted Applecare as well, and they could not offer any suggestions. Mac Mini, 1 Gig Ram, 80 Gig HD, OS X Tiger,

I had a very similar problem with my System when i did the 10.4.1 upgrade. I am on a Mac Mini 1.45GHz machine with 1GB of ram and an 80GB hard drive. Browsing was becoming almost unbearable. I searched all over the web for solutions and found many that did not help. Finally I came upon a solution that worked. My internet is back up to it's usual high speed self. Here is my solution : First contact your ISP and get their DNS server number. Then enter it into the DNS server field that is marked optional in your system preferences. I also have a DLink 604 router that I entered the DNS number into. Prior to entering the DNS number into the router I had to upgrade it's firmware.
Hope this is of some help to anyone experiencing similar issues.
