Becoming an Early Riser: Day One

posted on june 6, 2005, tag: me

Ever since I was in high school I've wanted to be a morning person. I've always been the guy who couldn't get up in the morning, the guy who had to be poked and prodded for 45 minutes each morning before he would actually get out of bed. Katia has spent the last 3 years dealing with this, and I've spent the last 8 years being annoyed with myself.

But no longer! Today is day one of my 30-day attempt to become an early riser. I'm using the method described by Steve Pavlina, wherein I go to bed each night when I'm tired, and only when I'm tired, and I wake up at a set time every morning. I've chosen 7:30AM as my daily time, since that's 2 hours before I have to be at work each morning. I'm considering changing the time to 7AM, because I feel I might not have enough spare time, but we'll see how this goes first.

This morning was easy, but it was cheap. Waking up one time is doable—the real test is waking up at 7:30AM each morning for the next 30 days.

Good luck! You'll totally love it. But you ought to go hardcore and wake at every morning at 4 AM and immediately run around with a medicine ball or something. Be scary.

The trick to early rising is to have children. This morning they woke me up at 6:15am and this was a good morning.

You want to feel pain? Get up at 4:30 AM every morning to help the wife get ready for work so she can beat the traffic.

Erik Weibust on 06/06/2005:

Hmm... I've never heard the part about only going to bed when you're tired. I've always heard the key to being up "on time" is getting in the habit of both going to bed and getting up at the same time.

You sound real proud about 7:30am. You must have really been a late sleeper to be proud of 7:30am. Good luck with the expirement.

I tried this for two days and failed. Pathetically.

If you make it past a week I'll give it a shot again.

Richard—I'm sure that's true, but I think I'd rather wait to have human alarm clocks for now. If I hate my actual alarm clock as much as I do now for waking me up, I can't imagine how much I would hate my kids.

Greg—That's awful. What time does she have to be at work?

Erik—Yes, I was a late sleeper. 7:30 is definitely a HUGE improvement for me.

Michael—2 days now. So far, so good.

After reading your entry, and upon finishing the article itself, I have also decided to become an early bird. :)

My summer job this year requires me to be at work at eight o' clock every morning. Now, to most that may not seem all that bad, but for a college student who had trouble waking up for their physic lab on Thursday morning, eight in the morning seems closer to six o' clock.

Today was my first day waking up at seven o' clock and it worked out perfectly, hopefully the same will apply for tomorrow.

Thanks so much for writing about this Garrett!

God Job Garrett. I too am working this summer, at 8. But since I have to walk frommy place, I'm up at 6.45 every morning.

The only sad thing is, I hav not gone to bed any earlier then 12.30AM. I've been hoping for those days I crash at 10.30PM, and then 2.30AM the next day, kinda thing.

Best of luck to you. Just remember to not think about falling asleep again once you wake up!

Timen on 06/11/2005:

Hmmm... I'm considering to do this with you. I've always wanted this as well... and now I have the time and the concentration to adjust it (summer-break), so I might as well do it now.

I'm going to set my time at 7:30 AM as well. I'll let you know how I'm doing in your posts.

Cranium Oxide on 06/17/2005:

7.30? Despite being one of those people who CANNOT get up in the morning, and is tired ALL the time, I have to get up at 6.45 every weekday.

Oh how it sucks, let me count the ways.

Garrett on 06/24/2005:

Yeah, that's no good. A lot of people have been saying to me recently that 7:30 isn't early, but for me it definitely is.
