Becoming an Early Riser: Day Seven

posted on june 13, 2005, tag: me

So far, so good. I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled last Thursday. It took nearly two hours to get the tooth out of my face, mostly because the roots were all curly and they just wouldn't come out. After it was finally over, they stitched me up a bit and sent me home. By the time I felt like going to sleep, I was having a decent amount of pain, so I took a Tylenol 3. When I tried to get up the next morning at 7:30, I felt like a zombie, so I pushed back my time until 8:30AM.

I did the same thing on Saturday too, because of the tooth, and Sunday as well because we were out a little late on Saturday night. So I woke up at 8:30AM the last three days. But this morning I'm back to 7:30. I plan to wake up at 7:30 every day it's possible, but in situations where I don't go to bed until 3AM, I obviously have to tweak my wake-up time a little.

I must say—I'm loving this morning thing. I really enjoy the extra time I have all to myself, and I feel a lot more productive. I'm definitely going to keep it up. On Saturday, before Katia and I met up with one of her friends, Kristin, at The Cloisters, I was able to shave my head and face, shower, do a sink-full of dishes, check my email and browse Flickr, watch some Futurama and do a bunch of other stuff all before we left for the day—and we left around noon. Two weeks ago, I probably wouldn't have even been awake at noon.

So I'm essentially on day two now, and even though I've only had to wake up twice (at 7 AM), it's going quite well. I, too, love the extra time I have. It makes me think of all the time others are wasting getting up at 12!

How are you on the 16th day of your experiment ? I have almost the same problem except that I am needed at my desk at 9 in my company and I can not leave my bed until 8:30.

Still successful. I'm waking up at 7:30AM every day, except Saturday and Sunday, when I usually wake up at 8:30 or 9AM because I'm usually up later on Friday and Saturday night.

But it's still working and I love it.

My girlfriend wakes up at 5am to go to work. This started to become a problem when I was getting up at 9am and therefore not going to sleep until at least four hours after she had called it a night. I now try and get up when she does, and when I do make it up (75% of the time) I feel so much better about the day. I've always been a happy morning person, but could never get myself out of bed that early to make anything of it. I'm now well on the way to making this a part of my life, and also therefore following in my fathers footsteps of an early riser...something I vowed never to do. I guess I'm getting older!

I have been an early riser for many years now. For a long time I had to be at work in los angeles(1 hour commute from the valley) by 7:00AM. Now I work n the valley and I don't need to wake up till 7:00. I have never really had a problem waking up, but similar to garret I have trouble working on projects on my computer all night. Often times I will work a full workday come home eat dinner with my girlfriend, watch a movie and then work another full workday overnight on a freelance project or some ridiculous application that I am writing for no reason.

I always wake up the next morning and I have not taken a sick day in over a year and a half. To top it off most weekends my girlfriend wakes me up early to get a head start on the day. Needless to say I have come increasingly sleep deprived. I think I need to start keeping a sleep journal or something. I really don't want to sacrifice my life for sleep, maybe I should write a program that's actually useful and I can become rich and not have to wake up for work anymore. That would be nice.

decent article on the subject.
